Meditation for Anxiety and Stress: The Hows & Whys

We are often just the tip away from experiencing chronic stress. This is why it is important to take the time out for yourself. Do mindful meditation for anxiety, breathing exercises for stress, and check in with yourself from time to time.

An average person today tends to juggle and balance a lot of things. There is education and job, a personal and social life, and the pressures of maintaining a certain standard of living to name a few. All the constant struggle to strike the right balance and lead the life of their dreams takes a heavy toll on their health.

To compensate for our increasingly fast paced lifestyle, we tend to turn towards convenience, often at the cost of our physical health. Automation of most day to day chores has rendered us physically inactive. And yet, we often feel tired and burnt out at the end of a workday. .

That is our mental health bearing the brunt of our life and lifestyle choices. Just as we need to nourish and nurture our body with good food and regular exercise to look after our physical health, we need to nourish and nurture our mind and our spirit to take care of our mental health.

Meditation is one such practice that nourishes our soul. It is not about stopping the train of thoughts that constantly arrives at the station of our mind. It is about becoming aware of it and learning to be able to observe our thoughts without judgement. You should regularly practice meditation for anxiety and stress. It lends a new perspective to our mind were we can make better sense of all our thoughts and emotions.

There are several benefits of daily meditation for anxiety and stress, and for overall wellness

Spend some time with yourself

The time you spend meditating is the time you spend with your own self. Away from the noise of the world going on about its business. It is just you and your thoughts. It will help you objectively observe your own emotions. Examine your actions and understand where you come from when you behave in a certain way. It helps you know yourself better and be kinder to yourself. The most important connection is the one that you have with your own self, meditation can help you rediscover and rekindle your love for your mind, body, and soul.

Meditation for anxiety and stress

We have all experienced the effect a few deep breaths can have on our mind when faced with a stressful situation. It has the power to instantly calm us down and energize us all in the same moment. Long hours at work, seemingly unending chores at home, all while trying to fulfil the expectations of our relationships can be stressful and takes up a lot of our energy. Meditating for a few minutes before you begin your day or right after you call it a day can release all the pent-up tension and help us destress. It can replenish your soul and energize your body, preparing it for another day.

Learn to control emotions

It is us who should have a control over our emotions and not the other way round. When you meditate regularly, you learn to understand your thoughts and emotions, you also learn what triggers the negative emotions of sorrow, anger, jealousy etc. in your mind. And that is when you can gain control over your emotions. Controlling one’s emotions doesn’t mean not expressing how you feel but expressing it on your own terms. It simply means learning how to react to and tackle stressful situations without letting your emotions get the better of you. It can curb your tendency to be impulsive and make you more thoughtful.

Meditation helps you slow down

Even if you love that fast-paced life, it is important to slow down every once in a while and take stock of your life. Ask yourself if you are happy? Are you content with the life that you have built for yourself? In our quest to march on, we tend to forget to enjoy the simpler joys of life. Slowing down also offers you the opportunity to enjoy all that you have achieved. You can gain a fresh outlook towards things which helps in making better and well thought out decisions.

Meditation enhances mindfulness

Observing your emotions, thoughts, actions, and reactions objectively can also make you mindful of your impact on the people around you. You become kind and more accepting. Not only of the people around you, but also of your own self. It promotes a positive self-image and significantly lowers the risk of anxiety and depression. It ensures you take steps in the right direction to improve your mental well-being.

In all, you should regularly practice meditation for anxiety and stress, and check in with yourself from time to time.

It is no magic potion that will suddenly lead you to enlightenment. However regular meditation will definitely change your life for better over time. It is an investment in yourself that will never stop giving. It will bring calm and quiet to your being. And from the stillness emerges mindfulness. Meditation is all about aligning your inner self with your outer self and becoming one with your mind and soul. And it doesn’t cost a dime. You don’t need expensive equipment to meditate. You don’t even have to step out of your house. Just some quiet time in the comfort of your home, every day and you can see your life transform.
