The Verdict on Organic Food

Organic food products gained popularity pretty rapidly and became a thing almost as soon as they came out. They were everywhere, and they still are. The only difference is now people are trying to understand their merits. Are they really as good as they claim to be?

Demand for Organic Food

When they came out, organic food companies did aggressive marketing. They made people join their side before they could even think. They did not actually get the chance to discuss its merits and demerits. This was, in large part, because of the exclusivity. Organic food products were previously only available at premium “healthy” shops that catered to the elite. Now, organic food is available at every shop around the block. And people are starting to wonder whether organic food is worth the hype and why it is so expensive.

But, Are They Worth It?

The truth is it depends. Organic food is sustainable, follows ethical farming, contains fewer pesticides, and has a rich nutritional makeup. But, not all foods that claim to be organic are really so. A lot of brands that claim to have organic food are not certified. They often follow only a limited number of the practices. So, they do not qualify for the certification for organic food products. However, they use substitute terms to convince people of their merits. This, needless to say, does more harm than good. To ensure that the brand is verified and produces organic food, you must simply check the label. If it has a USDA Organic seal, you are good to go.

Benefits of Organic Food

In fact, true organic food products have been proven to contain more nutrients (such as flavonoids), omega-3 fatty acids (found in dairy and poultry), and fewer amounts of chemicals and cadmium (a highly toxic metal). In fact, other than the pretty steep cost, there is no proven drawback to buying organic food.

Maintain Precaution

That said, it is essential that you maintain the same level of precaution. You should treat organic food just like conventional produce when it comes to food safety. You should buy organic fruits and vegetables when they are in season and are freshly harvested. A useful tip would be to buy organic food from your local farmer’s market. You should also maintain caution and wash organic fruits and vegetables thoroughly to ensure all bacteria and dirt comes off before consumption. If proper precaution is maintained, organic food is certainly the way to go.
